I wanted to like this, and based on Caletti’s past works I was so sure I would. She’s always approached the topic of emotionally abusive relationships with the utmost sensitivity and a finesse that has me following each protagonist down the rabbit hole. But while Clara was a believable enough character, her boyfriend wasn’t. Christian didn’t do the honeymoon phase well enough for me to understand how Clara could continue to make excuses for him, and I found myself constantly frustrated with her. Which would be all well and good if this was told from the point-of-view of a concerned friend, but as it was Clara’s story, I needed to be right there with her in the push-and-pull of emotions. Sorry, Caletti, but this one’s a miss for me.
